    The Cougar Pantry is a student led, donation-based organization that was created in 2018 to combat food insecurity while helping to unify the College of Charleston campus through collaboration and student involvement.

  • Black Liberation Fund

    The Black Liberation Fund is a nonprofit organization who believes that the modern justice system is a reflection of the past slavery system.

    Black Liberation Fund's (BLF) investment of services include record clearing services (Project Exodus) and necessary community connections for post incarcerated individuals.  

    BLF additionally offers educational workshops, events, and advocacy opportunities whenever possible to educate and involve our communities in a restorative justice system.

  • Charleston Legal Access is a nonprofit law firm that provides quality and affordable legal services. Our hourly rates are determined by income and household size and range between $50-$100 per hour. At CLA, everyone deserves access to quality legal services at an affordable price.

  • Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services provides free civil legal assistance for low income clients

  • The Charleston Area Urban League offers free tax preparation services to those who qualify through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). Our Tax Professionals work hard to make the process of filing your taxes simple and easy.

  • Increasing Hope (Helping Others Prosper Economically) has been providing financial training educational opportunities to the local community. We are a nonprofit financial training center with a passion to see individuals and families become educated, enriched and empowered in the area of personal finance.

  • Mediation + Meeting Center Charleston The Mediation and Meeting Center of Charleston (MMCC) is a non-profit organization serving the Lowcountry by providing affordable, high quality mediation services. We match volunteer mediators with qualified parties seeking quality low-cost mediation services.

  • Charleston County Rescue Squad

    Volunteers Dedicated to Saving Lives In Charleston County, volunteers trained in life-saving skills are available to provide help when emergencies occur.

    The Rescue Squad is a volunteer-based non-profit organization contracted by Charleston County, South Carolina to provide support and operations for automobile and heavy extrication, missing or injured boaters, land and marine search & rescue, confined space and high angle rescue, diving, drowning recovery, swift water rescue, and more.

  • The Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy's ministry provides comfort and counsel to first responders, their families and the victims of crisis.

    The chaplains bring expert critical incident stress management and a caring presence to the most difficult, stressful scenes.

    Please understand that we receive many VOLUNTEER inquiries. From those inquiries, we then select those who are invited to apply. There is an extensive application vetting process, and then final selection of candidates. Our volunteers then go through an intensive training process to equip them to serve on an amazing mission team offering Light and Hope to our first responders, survivors and community!

  • Water Mission is a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in developing countries and disaster areas.

basics: critical healthcare services

  • The Access Health Tri-County Network (AHTN) was developed in 2010, with support from Access Health SC and The Duke Endowment, and is comprised of 27 partners providing a wide range of healthcare and health-related services that work to provide uninsured residents in the Tri-County region with a coordinated approach to access to healthcare.  The Network partners consist of hospitals, free clinics, healthcare centers, outreach providers, Department of Mental Health, local health department and volunteer primary care/specialty care providers.

    The mission of AccessHealth Tri-County Network is to coordinate a sustainable provider network of care for low-income, uninsured residents in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

    The objectives of the network are focused on appropriate client referral, navigation to a medical home and specialists’ services and use of health information technology that allows for shared health information and electronic health records. The Network’s clients and partners voluntarily participate in the program.

  • Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic

    We are a free clinic in Charleston, SC. At Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic, we treat patients for all of their primary care health needs, including diabetes, hypertension, coronary disease, depression, and more. Our on-going primary care is provided to our patients just like any typical family practice, but at no cost.

  • Tri county Crisis Stabilization Center (TCSC) is a 10 bed, voluntary, adult crisis unit serving Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. This unit is designed to provide an urgent treatment option for individuals experiencing psychiatric symptoms which may require medication adjustments and/or counseling support. Historically, individuals experiencing these needs would go to the local hospital emergency departments (EDs) or jail. TCSC provides an alternative treatment option with a goal of diverting individuals from unnecessary ED visits or jail when possible.

  • The Dream Center Clinic (DCC) is a faith-based free medical clinic. Our purpose is to provide routine, outpatient health and wellness services to the medically underserved residents of North Charleston, Hanahan, Goose Creek and West Ashley in South Carolina.

    The primary focus is on uninsured families, whose income is below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The DCC relies on medical and non-medical volunteers to provide services at the clinic during hours that are convenient to our patients.

  • ECCO Dental Services East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) provides a range of dental procedures and services for uninsured adults each year – all at no cost to the patient. Through our partnership with the MUSC College of Dental Medicine and Trident Technical College of Dental Hygiene, we are able to provide preventative and restorative care, as well as extractions through our Extraction Clinic. Last year, we provided more than $532,000 worth of dental care to nearly 700 neighbors.

  • Fetter Health Care Network has been proud to provide access to quality, affordable care throughout the Lowcountry. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we are dedicated to supporting insured, uninsured and underserved residents in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester Counties.

  • Fisher House Charleston, at 150 Wentworth Street, in the heart of Charleston welcomed its first guests in January 2018 into a massive 15,000 square feet, 16 bedroom home-away-from-home in the heart of Charleston’s historical downtown. We couldn’t have asked for a better location to be a solace for familes with loved ones being treated at Charleston’s Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

  • Harvest Free Medical Clinic

    Harvest Free Medical Clinic is a 501c3 non-profit organization, founded in 2003. It has been the joy of the clinic to serve the greater Charleston community for over 20 years!

    Our primarily volunteer staff is excited to provide free medical care and medications to those without resources to pay.

    We aim to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ through the care at Harvest. All individuals are eligible for care without regard to faith, nationality, creed, or lifestyle.

  • Lowcountry Center for Veterans Research's (LCVR) mission is to advance discovery and innovation through research initiatives dedicated to improving the overall health and well-being of veterans living in the lowcountry.

    ​​This program encompasses studies in medical research, health services research, and clinical trials. Our team of nationally and internationally recognized physicians and scientists is committed to advancing the understanding of disease causes and improving treatment methods

  • The Lowcountry Regional Emergency Medical Services Council, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization serving the twelve counties in the Lowcountry Region by providing training, consulting, and technical assistance to emergency services agencies and other allied health agencies and personnel. It is the express purpose of the EMS Council to assist in the development of emergency health care systems within EMS Region IV of South Carolina, and to increase the accessibility and continuity of the overall quality of health care in the Lowcountry Region of South Carolina.

    We are a faith-based charity dental clinic operating in the heart of Charleston to the glory of God. Our team includes staff, volunteers, and community partners working together to love our neighbors.

  • MUSC Mobile Health Unit

    MUSC Hollings Cancer Center launched its new, state-of-the-art Mobile Health Unit in 2022 to continue its mission to provide cancer screening and education services to communities designated as the most medically underserved in South Carolina.

    Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are small, portable electronic devices used to restore normal heart rhythm to people in cardiac arrest. AEDs are safe and easy to use, making it possible for non-medical personnel to be trained to provide rapid defibrillation.

  • Outreach & Temporary Assistance

    By providing temporary assistance with food, water and shelter, Palmetto CAP’s Outreach department provides vital services to address citizens’ most basic needs.  Being able to meet basic needs is the foundation of financial stability.  A family cannot earnestly pursue the empowerment goals needed to lift them out of poverty until these needs are met.

  • Charleston Area Urban League Center for Housing provides assistance to families in need of better housing while combating housing inequities for low-to-moderate income households. Our comprehensive housing counseling services equip families with the knowledge and support necessary to address their housing needs. Our clients gain the financial literacy and knowledge necessary to obtain and maintain safe, clean, stable and affordable housing.

  • Charleston Habitat for Humanity is building homes, communities and hope throughout the Charleston area. Join us and make a difference in the lives of local families in need!

  • Confederate Home and College is a source of 5 college scholarships and moderately priced housing for qualified residents.

  • Dorchester Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1993, and since then has completed 74 homes in Dorchester County. Our homes are sold to those in need of a decent and affordable place to live. Habitat homeowners have gone through a strenuous pre-qualification process and pay a 30-year, interest-free mortgage back to Dorchester Habitat.

  • East Cooper Habitat for Humanity serves the communities east of the Cooper River and select areas of Berkeley County in South Carolina.  Founded on January 31, 1990, we believe that having access to safe and affordable housing is a basic human right. Our homes are sold to those in need of a decent and affordable place to live.

  • Feed the Need Join us in continuing our mission of alleviating hunger and homelessness in Charleston. Since its inception in 2009, Feed the Need has served more than 750,000 nutritious meals to those in need, addressing hunger one plate at a time.

    Beyond meal service, Feed the Need empowers life through job training for the homeless and disadvantaged, offering a clear route to economic independence and a brighter future.

    Fix-It! is an essential home repair program for East Cooper homeowners living in ill-fit conditions. Our volunteers offer assistance with repairs relating to safety, health and accessibility.

  • Through affordable homeownership opportunities, financial education, advocacy efforts, and neighborhood empowerment programs, Berkeley Habitat empowers families, advocates for affordable housing opportunities and strives for community collaboration.

  • Home Again of the Lowcountry provides furniture and household items to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness and into new homes.

  • Homeless to Hope Center, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit 501c3 organization founded in 2023 to assist and support the City of Charleston’s Hope Center in the provision of comprehensive, community-based wraparound services for those experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness, and ensure an availability of resources that promote stability and self-sufficiency among unsheltered and vulnerable individuals and families living in Charleston, South Carolina.

  • Hope to Home We source, warehouse, repair and provide basic home furnishings to individuals and families in our community who are coming out of distressed situations and striving toward a new life on purpose. We collect new and “gently used”, donated home goods and work with community service agencies to get those goods into the hands of those who need them most, at no cost to the recipient.

  • Housing Authority of the City of Charleston Welcome Home! Our mission is to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing to citizens on low – to – moderate income. Since our inception in 1935, the Housing Authority of the City of Charleston has provided assistance to tens of thousands of families.

    Every single night, over 4,000 households, roughly 9.2% of the population of the City of Charleston, are occupied by families who receive housing assistance through our Agency.

    Volunteers are always welcome to help newcomers to America acclimate to life in the US by tutoring English, providing transportation, or setting up homes and apartments. New Americans are forced from their homelands due to circumstances beyond their control. Our program and volunteers really make a difference in helping them adapt to our country.

    Churches and other community groups may wish to participate in the Circle of Welcome, which supports LSC New American clients.

  • ONE80 PLACE

    Mission is to end and prevent homelessness. One80 Place has adopted Housing First and Rapid Re-Housing practices. We offer a number of supportive services including but not limited to; medical, legal, food rescue, and job training.

  • Operation Home has been serving the Tricounty community for 27 years. Annually, we serve over 1,000 families through our critical home repair, wheelchair ramp and heat and cold relief programs.  Operation Home focuses our services on households with children, the disabled and seniors.

  • Oxford House SC is a concept in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. In its simplest form, an Oxford House describes a democratically run, self-supporting and substance free home.

  • Palmetto CAP’s General Emergency Assistance Program (or GEAP) provides financial assistance to households who have encountered an unexpected financial hardship including rental assistance to avoid eviction. 

    Assistance is provided once every 24 months..  Applicants must be able to present documentation of an emergency within the past 30 days and have sustainable monthly income.  To schedule a pre-screening call, please dial 1-844-769-6448 or click here.  Charleston residents are asked to check for available screening times beginning at 8 AM on Tuesdays. Dorchester and Berkeley residents are asked to check beginning at 8 AM  on Thursdays.

The facility will offer beds, showers, meals, beverages, and counseling services provided by the Kennedy Center and Berkeley Mental Health. By addressing basic needs, this new initiative aims to create stability and promote dignity for the unhoused community.

  • Gateway to Housing, started by North Charleston-based nonprofit Neighbors Together, follows the low barrier housing model, the first of its kind in the state. The model provides financial incentives to property owners to remove barriers for rent approval, such as low credit score, prior evictions or criminal background.

    The Remnant House Outreach Ministry (RHOM) is dedicated to providing treatment and recovery services for men struggling with opioid and other addictions. Our comprehensive 12-month, around-the-clock opioid treatment and recovery program offers housing, transportation, meals, job placement and training, clinical counseling, and assistance with societal integration.

  • For people with cancer who have no way of getting to treatment, our Road To Recovery® program is there to help. Driving patients to lifesaving treatment is one of the most meaningful volunteer experiences you can have with the American Cancer Society.

    We need volunteers so we can help more cancer patients. Unfortunately, we can’t provide rides to everyone who asks us to help them. You can change that.
