community: development

  • Berkeley Electric Cooperative has grown into a state-of-the-art electric utility serving over 96,000 active members and more than 112,000 active meters in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties with over 5,000 miles of line connecting them all together. This makes Berkeley Electric Cooperative the largest electric cooperative in South Carolina, and one of the top 25 in the nation.

  • Bridge North Charleston Accabee and Hub Village are adjacent neighborhoods in lower North Charleston. Centrally located in a rapidly changing area near the intersection of Cosgrove Avenue and Azalea Drive, near the Rivers Avenue commercial redevelopment. Its residents are hardworking people who care about their families, one another, and their community.

  • The City of Charleston Housing + Community Development Program

    Creates, facilitates, and implements activities and programs that stimulate community and economic development, expand, and preserve the supply of affordable and workforce housing, and stimulate the construction and rehabilitation of housing for persons of very low, low, and moderate incomes. The DHCD addresses priority goals established in the Consolidated Plan through established programs in Development, Preservation, Grant Administration, and Homelessness Initiatives.

  • City of Charleston Neighborhood Council The Neighborhood Council is a unique organization currently composed of 120 democratically organized neighborhood associations. Groups of presidents from these associations meet with the Mayor and his staff throughout the year in regularly scheduled sessions to share information, report concerns and make suggestions that will improve the quality of life for residents and the city as a whole. There are currently seven sectors of neighborhood presidents in geographically connected areas of the city. There are two sectors downtown, three sectors in West Ashley, one comprising Daniel Island and Cainhoy, and one sector comprising James and Johns Islands.

  • C.A.G.E. Community Action Group for Encouragement is a non-profit organization created to improve the quality of life in the Seven and Six Mile Communities located in Mount Pleasant, SC.  However, this geographic area does not represent the limitations of our involvement.   Members of the organization recognize that neighboring communities face the same issues that affect the Six and Seven Mile Communities. CAGE has expanded its efforts to include communities from Mount Pleasant to McClellanville, SC.

  • Charleston Apartment Association is a non-profit organization comprised of professionals that support, serve, advocate and educate the multi-family industry. As leaders, we are dedicated to our industry’s growth and its evolution.

  • The Charleston Area Justice Ministry

    The Charleston Area Justice Ministry (CAJM), is a growing network of faith-based congregations who are culturally, economically, geographically and religiously diverse who come together to make the Charleston area a more just place to live, work, and do business.

  • Green and Healthy, Inc. (G&H) was established in September of 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina as a public, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization by members of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the local community, who have decades of experience working in the Charleston Medical District (CMD) and overseeing operations within that area, including the building of the new Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and the Pearl Tourville Women's Pavilion (offering services specific to women); and as part of MUSC Health deliver more care to South Carolina’s Medicaid population than any other provider.

     

    G&H.'s mission is to support the CMD's Greenway project, which includes developing a place for patients to heal, a place for friends and family to connect, and an outdoor meeting space for colleagues, by implementing a health-first approach to helping mitigate the climate issues of extreme heat and flooding, and other projects related to health equity in Charleston.

  • City of Charleston Neighborhood Services serves residents by being a trusted partner to neighborhoods with the intent of promoting equitable access to resources, civic engagement, and community decision-making through education, dialogue, and outreach. We envision a city where residents feel empowered to participate in community decision-making processes and have equitable access to City resources.

  • CLIMB Fund is a not-for-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) whose mission is to ensure access to capital for entrepreneurs and small businesses that cannot secure traditional financing.

  • Coastal Community Foundationworks to create communities rich in equity, well-being and opportunity through industry partnerships, thought leadership and advocacy, and by engaging donors who wish to be part of positive changes in coastal South Carolina. As we address policy changes and other large-scale needs to advance equity in our region, we create an environment where donors can amplify the impact of their generosity.

  • Friends of the Muni, Fore Y'all Designed to last, Friends of the Muni, Inc. is a 501C3 Non Profit created to help fund the 2020 renovation of Charleston Municipal Golf Course and continues and continues to remain an integral asset to the Muni by providing necessary resources to keep the course accessible, affordable and enjoyable for everyone.

  • Joseph P. Riley Jr. Center for Livable Communities

    The Joseph P. Riley Jr. Center for Livable Communities is an interdisciplinary initiative of the College of Charleston whose mission is to leverage the intellectual resources of the College to support the economic and cultural vibrancy of the City of Charleston and other communities throughout South Carolina, the United States, and around the world.

    With access to the resources of the College of Charleston's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Riley Center seeks to be a leader in livable community research, education and practice. The Riley Center defines "livable communities" as those which are economically and culturally vibrant, with equitable access for all residents to education, jobs, healthcare, housing, and parks and recreation, as well as diverse opportunities in arts and culture.

  • The Liberty Hill Improvement Council provides a place for local non profits and other organizations/individuals to meet and collaborate on projects, activities, and proposed solutions for improving the Liberty Hill community of North Charleston.

  • Lowcountry Council of Governments

    The Lowcountry Council of Governments (LCOG) is 1 of 10 South Carolina councils designed to serve as a connection between the local governments and the State and Federal programs. We work with the local governments to identify and coordinate regional development, strengthen services, and cooperate for the mutual benefit to best serve our citizens. We are a resource to four counties and twenty-one cities and towns within Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper Counties.

  • Lowcountry Housing & Economic Development Foundation helps the people of the South Carolina lowcountry improve their lives through economic development, home ownership, housing rehabilitation, job preparation and financial management training services.

  • Lowcountry Rapid Transit

    Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT) is a modern bus rapid transit system that will connect the region, its communities, key destinations and employment centers. This project will transform our region by improving transportation for people traveling on buses, on foot and on bikes. The foundation of LCRT will serve Charleston, North Charleston and Ladson, and spark upward mobility and economic growth through the area.

  • Metanoia

    A Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a nonprofit organization incorporated to provide programs and develop projects that promote and support a particular set of disinvested neighborhoods. 

    As a certified CDC, Metanoia is defined by our community-based leadership and community-oriented goals in southern North Charleston.

  • Palmetto Project

    Our mission is to identify innovative strategies to address the social and economic challenges facing our state, and put them into action.

  • PASTORS Revitalization Empowerment Development

    PASTORS was formed in 1999 as a 501C(3) Public/Private Partnership collaborative among various houses of worship initially focused on revitalization and stabilization of the housing stock in the City of Charleston’s Enterprise Community. PASTORS has worked across a number of jurisdictions successfully completing projects in Charleston County, City of North Charleston, and the Town of Hollywood.

  • Joseph P.   • The South Carolina Association for Community Economic Development (SCACED) is a coalition of individuals and organizations who support the development of healthy and economically sustainable communities throughout South Carolina. Our members work collaboratively to build wealth and create economic opportunity for all SC residents, and many of our efforts are focused on minority communities and other groups who have been left out of the economic mainstream.

  • West Ashley Revitalization Committee

    The West Ashley Revitalization Commission is an appointed committee that shall work to assure the long-term economic stability of West Ashley by revitalizing the unique character of the district and supporting values that assure West Ashley is a great place to live, work, play, invest and do business.

  • Center for Jewish LIfe: Chabad of Charleston is dedicated to serving all Jews throughout Charleston and The Low Country area with Ahavat Yisrael –unconditional love and concern for every Jew, regardless of background and affiliation.

  • Charleston Port + Seafarers Society is a Christian organization that exists for the purpose of welcoming and serving the needs of those men and women who make their livelihood in the port or at sea, without regard for nationality, race, ethnicity, politics or religion.

  • Charleston Tibetan Society Charleston Tibetan Society is a non-profit religious and educational organization under the spiritual direction of Geshe Dakpa Topgyal. It was founded in 1994 with three missions: to increase the awareness of Tibet and its unique culture, to bring the major world religions together to make a more effective contribution to humanity and world peace, and to raise funds to help Tibetan refugees living in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

  • The Filipino Community of Charleston, SC Inc. is a social service agency, dedicated to enriching the life of the individual Filipino and the Filipino Community. Its programs are permeated with the cultural and ethnic values comprising the Filipino way of life on the American scene

  • The Huguenot Society of South Carolina was established in 1885 to preserve the memory of the Huguenots who left France prior to the promulgation of the Edict of Toleration, November 28, 1787. Today, the Society has nearly 2,000 members who are descendants of those Huguenots.

  • Lowcountry Rice Culture Project Serve as a clearinghouse and partnership builder for activities that explore, reveal and reclaim the shared cultural inheritance of the southeastern Lowcountry rice legacy

    The Scottish Society of Charleston, Inc. was founded to honor and keep alive the Scottish heritage and customs in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Cherishing our past while preserving customs for the future, we host ongoing events in the Lowcountry which support the community and keep our rich traditions alive.

  • Transformation Table creates space
    in the Charleston community to connect with our common humanity.   • Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians

    provides economic enhancement of the Varnertown Community: to educate its members in their history and culture; to provide opportunities for its people to share their arts and culture; to preserve the history and traditions of its ancestors; and to promote public awareness of the community's contribution and existence in the general population.

    Typical organizational activities include traditional art and culture classes, community food sustainability programs, educational outreach and speaking engagements, resources for scholarships and economic enhancements, cross-cultural exchanges including the Annual Powwow, and digital engagements through online presence. These activities are all a part of the general operation expenses and are comprehensive, engaging, and accessible to everyone.   • Black Charleston Professionals + Directory provides visibility to black owned businesses and black professionals in the Charleston, SC and tri-county area through business education, networking, and community engagement

  • Black Liberation Fund

    The Black Liberation Fund is a nonprofit organization who believes that the modern justice system is a reflection of the past slavery system.

    Black Liberation Fund's (BLF) investment of services include record clearing services (Project Exodus) and necessary community connections for post incarcerated individuals.  

    BLF additionally offers educational workshops, events, and advocacy opportunities whenever possible to educate and involve our communities in a restorative justice system.

    The mission of Trident Literacy Association is to eliminate all adult illiteracy and reverse the cycle of generational poverty in the Charleston Tri-County Region.   • Turn 90 Working with men at the highest risk of re-arrest, Turn90 combines cognitive behavioral classes, supportive services, transitional work, and job placement to create an opportunity for success after prison where one doesn't currently exist.

  • Second Chance Jobs

    Our team supports our participants in overcoming barriers to employment. Second Chance Jobs coaches provide individualized career planning, training, skills gap training, leadership training and more.  We connect our participants to employers seeking qualified candidates. Everyone from justice involved citizens, transitioning veterans, displaced workers, homeless and people seeking a new career have all benefited from our programs and entered into sustainable employment.

  • African American Settlement Historic Commission Our Story, Our Culture, Our Community · Protect and preserve the existing characteristics of African American Settlement Communities and enhance the quality of life for current and future generations of residents of the African American Settlement Communities.

  • Anson Street African American Burial Grounds: We are a multidisciplinary team of researchers and educators. Through historical, anthropological, archaeological, genetic, and genealogical research we work with communities to share, preserve and protect African descendant burial grounds.

  • Welcome to the website for the Charleston Area Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).

    We are a group of individuals and institutions that promote the study of African American history by hosting lectures and panel sessions.

    The Berkeley County Museum tells a story over 12,000 years old. This history belongs to all of us.

    The Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center is made possible by people like you!   • Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World The Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW) Program at the College of Charleston promotes scholarship and public engagement with the history and culture of the Lowcountry region, the Atlantic World and the connections between the two.

    The Carolina Lowcountry is a vibrant crossroads where stories from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas come together. CLAW reveals the interwoven connections of these diverse cultures, societies and ethnicities and encourages the ongoing dialogue and scholarly study of the shared history that binds them.

  • Drayton Hall Trust fosters a deeper understanding of colonial America and the evolution of life in the South by discovering, researching, conserving, and interpreting the history, context, and culture of Drayton Hall.

  • Edmondston-Alston House

    The collection at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum consists of furniture, paintings, silver, books and other objects that belonged to the family, reflecting not only family history but American history.

  • Friends of the Hunley

    The Hunley became the world’s first successful combat submarine in 1864 and is not only an important relic in Naval history but was also a time capsule holding a wide array of fascinating artifacts from the 19th century and is now preserved in a submarine naval museum where our nation’s story under the waves can be told for generations to come.

  • Gullah Geechee Heritage Preservation Project a 2-year initiative, is a multi-jurisdictional collaboration to support documentation, recognition and preservation of historic Gullah Geechee/African-American Ancestral Communities and their significant historic and cultural sites. This program is made possible by a $75,000 grant from the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) administered by the National Park Service, matching funds from the City of Charleston and Preservation Society of Charleston; and significant contributions in staff time and support from Charleston County and the Town of Mt. Pleasant.

  • Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is a National Heritage Area and it was established by the U.S. Congress to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally resided in the coastal areas and the sea islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.   • The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon

    Built in 1771 as a commercial exchange and custom house, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon has been a Charleston landmark for nearly 250 years. Today, it is a non-profit historic site that focuses on the American Revolution and colonial Charleston.

  • The Powder Magazine is a museum where you can explore Charleston's colonial period in the last standing component of Charleston's original fortifications. Completed in 1713,

  • The Slave Dwelling Project envisions a future in which the hearts and minds of Americans acknowledge a more truthful and inclusive narrative of the history of the nation that honors the contributions of all our people, is embedded and preserved in the buildings and artifacts of people of African heritage, and inspires all Americans to acknowledge their Ancestors

  • South Carolina National Heritage Center
    Designated in 1996, the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC) is committed to promoting and preserving the cultural, natural and historic resources of the state. The corridor stretches across 17 counties from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and encompasses everything from the Cherokee Foothills, to the Savannah and Ashley Rivers, to plantation houses, to Edisto Island.

  • South Carolina Historical Society Archives are located in the South Carolina Historical Society Reading Room on the third floor of the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library. They contain manuscripts, letters, journals, maps, drawings, photographs, and artifacts.

  • Alliance for Full Acceptance

    To achieve, nurture, and defend equality and full acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. To dispel the myths and half-truths that trap us all – about economy, race, and origin; who we can and can’t be; who we can and can’t love; who’s entitled to freedom and expression, and who’s not; who’s valuable, and who’s expendable – and reveal our true essence and pride.

  • The Apartment Association

    The Charleston Apartment Association is a non-profit organization comprised of professionals that support, serve, advocate and educate the multi-family industry. As leaders, we are dedicated to our industry’s growth and its evolution.

  • The Charleston Area Ladies Tennis Association CALTA is a 501(c)(7) volunteer-run social tennis league for women formed in 2000.  Play consists of four courts of doubles played Tuesdays at 9:30am across the Lowcountry at 20 participating tennis centers. In 2023-24 CALTA had 1,128 members.

  • Charleston Black Pride is the #1 source for local resources, events, news and more LGBTQIA people of color. Established in 2019, this nonprofit organization was built on the dire need for inclusion and equality in the Lowcountry. CHSBP is focused on creating the change that is necessary for Lesbian, Gay, Bi sexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual or Allied.

  • The Charleston Chess Club The Charleston Chess Club meets every Monday night at 7:00pm in the Education Building of Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC 29401.  Our annual membership dues are $10.00 and entitle you to all activities of the club including club championship tournaments, quick chess tournaments, thematic tournaments and team events.

  • Charleston Junior Women's Club (CJWC) is a historic, nonprofit organization dedicated to volunteerism. The CJWC leadership stresses community involvement among its members, who devote their time and talent to numerous organizations. CJWC also participates in State and International Conventions in its connection to the General Federation of Women's Clubs where it is recognized for its civic leadership. This connection provides club women with networking opportunities within the general federation.

  • Charleston Leadership Foundation (CLF) was founded in 2002 in order to bring together local Christian leaders to minister to the community and change lives.

  • The Charleston Model Railroad Club CAMRC was organized in 1983 to give those interested in model railroading an opportunity to have fun, learn, and share with others.  In 2008 we had an opportunity to move into our current wonderful home, the Citadel Mall.

  • Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children is a consortium of appointed citizens, legislators, and agency directors charged with the critical responsibility of identifying and studying key issues facing South Carolina's children, then promoting sound strategies for the development of children's policy.
